Engr. Dizon bags a best paper award in iWatCon22

The first International Conference on Interdisciplinary Water Studies (iWatCon22), with the theme "Reimagining Water Future" Connecting the Visible and Invisible", provides a forum for local, regional, and global exchange of perspectives, knowledge, and practices on sustainable water resources management to reimagine the future of water, benchmark the invisible, and link the invisible and visible. The conference consists of plenary sessions with a variety of renowned speakers who are experts in the field of multidisciplinary studies on water. Applications of Nuclear Energy, Science, and Technology in the Assessment of Water Resources in the Philippines; Characterization of Hydrological Systems Using Isotopes; Occurrence and Risk Assessment of Emerging Micropollutants in Water Environment; The State of the Groundwater in the Philippines: Challenges and Opportunities; Water Resources and Agriculture in Southeast Asia; Identifying, Understanding, and Mitigating Environmental Issues: The Necessity of Water Quality Monitoring and Modeling; and Reimagining the Irrigation System in Hungary: Research and Education for the Development of Irrigation Management are a few of the topics covered.

iWatCon22 Best Paper: Poster Category

Engr. Jose Carlo R. Dizon, a faculty member of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering, participated in the said event and presented his work on Hydrologic Modeling and Flood Inundation Mapping of Imus River Basin, Cavite, Philippines Using Hydrologic Engineering Center - Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) and River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). Engr. Dizon together with his co-authors, Dr. Roger A. Luyun Jr., Dr. Rubenito M. Lampayan, and Prof. Moises A. Dorado, won the Best Paper Award for the Poster Category.

iWatCon 2022 also covers research in different categories such as Water Resource Assessment and Management; Water in Food Systems; Water and Urban Systems; Economics of Water; Water Technology and Innovation; Pollution of Water Resources; Water-related Disasters; and Water Policy and Governance. The conference was held on November 10-11, 2022.

RMM bested the R&D paper in NSAARRD 2022

On November 10, 2022, the DOST-PCAARRD celebrated its 50th Founding Anniversary with the theme "Tatak GALING, Galing PCAARRD: Celebrating 50 years of Ecellence in AANR Innovations". The PCAARRD Complex in Los Banos, Laguna, was the site of the aforementioned event. The occasion also served as the award ceremony for this year's National Symposium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (NSAARRD 2022) winners. 

Dr. Ruel M. Mojica and his team's project, "Piloting and Commercialization of Coffee Blends", took first place in the Best Development Paper category.

DAFE holds workshop and design thinking on Future DAFE RDE Framework

An event called "Workshop and Design Thinking on Future DAFE Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Framework" is held by the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE). Majority of the department's faculty members participated the activity. Dr. Ruel M. Mojica, who covers the presentation of new technologies, navigating the future, partnership between universities and industry, education, extension, research, innovation, internationalization, and the future of CvSU and DAFE, led the workshop.

The main objective of the workshop is crafting the RDE framework of DAFE aligned to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , Philippine Development PlanPhilippine government ten-point policy agenda, national priority plans, priority research areas of RDIs, and the RDE agenda of regional, provincial, and municipal local government units. RDE agenda of CvSU through OVPRE was also discussed.

Ultimately, the department is eyeing to conduct and publish numerous significant and responsive researches and development projects which can be extended to communities and other stakeholders.  The activity plays a vital role on strategizing the future of the department on research, development, and extension activities of the students, faculty members, and researchers, and with other key players and stakeholders. DAFE attends ABE students' general assembly

After more than two years of life-changing effect of COVID-19, the Philippine Society of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Pre-professional group (PSABE-PPG) CvSU Chapter conducted its annual general assembly on October 27, 2022, with the theme"Mislabelled Pursuit". About three hundred agricultural and biosystems engineering (ABE) students from five-year levels and DAFE faculty members attended the event.

The purpose of the activity is to foster camaraderie among the participants, introduce the instructors and professors, and debate the organization's constitution and by-laws (CBL). The accomplishment and financial reports, as well as the activity calendar, were also presented. One of the phases in re-establishing the organization in compliance with its aim of serving as a hub for its members' social and academic growth is the conduct of this activity.

Inspirational messages from Dr. Ruel M. Mojica and Engr. Mariella Jezreel R. Oliver (2021 ABE Licensure Exam 8th Placer) were delivered during the assembly. The organization also congratulated the recent batch of the 2022 ABE Licensure Examination. Engr. Roy Ocampo shared his experiences as a student and his post-graduation life. He also emphasized the value of taking and passing the ABE licensure examination to advance an AE/ABE career, and the versatility of the AE/ABE profession. (KACrystal)

Dr. Ruel M. Mojica presents in NSAARRD 2022, receives certificates of Fairness Opinion for three coffee blends technology from DOST-CALABARZON

Dr. Ruel M. Mojica and his team qualified as finalist under the development catergory for this year's National Symposium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (NSAARRD) on October 19, 2022 hosted by DOST-PCAARRD. The said event was held at the DOST-PCAARRD, Innovation and Technology Center, Los Banos, Laguna, and was also simultaneously streamed in their official FB Page. Dr. Mojica's project on piloting and commercialization of specialty coffee blends is expected to provide income generating opportunities to coffee farmers and business investors.

This project was also awarded the Certificates of Fairness Opinion by DOST-CALABARZON for the three coffee blends technology in the Regional Science and Technology Week cum DOST Stakeholders Forum and Caravan held at Batangas State University.

CvSU has 6 new professional agricultural and biosystems engineers

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the results of the September 2022 Agricultural and Biosystems Engineer Licensure Examination (ABELE) on September 20, 2022, Tuesday. The examination was given by the Board of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering on September 15-16, 2022, in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Legaspi, Lucena, Koronadal, and Tuguegarao.

As announced, 832 out of 1,968 examinees passed the exam, with a national passing rate of 42.28%. Six out of fourteen examinees from Cavite State University passed the exam with a passing rate of 42.86%.

DAFE faculty members finished graduate studies in UPLB

The 50th Commencement Exercises of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños happened last August 6, 2022, at UPLB's Copeland Gym. There were a total of 1,549 graduates from the nine degree-granting units of the university, and among them were Engr. Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, Engr. John Paulo M. Perido, and Engr. Melrose M. Salona. Both Engr. Crystal and Engr. Perido finished their Masters of Science in Agricultural Engineering majoring in Farm Power and Machinery, while Engr. Salona finished her Master of Science in Agrometeorology. Their studies have been sponsored by the DOST-SEI ERDT Scholarship.

Dr. Mojica talks about technology commercialization in SUCs

Cavite State University – Research Center launched the third episode of its webinar series entitled "Commercializing Technologies In SUCs: A Step-By-Step Guide". At the said event, Dr. Ruel M. Mojica, a professor from the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering and a designated faculty researcher, served as the main speaker. Dr. Mojica has wide and reliable experience in technology commercialization. His various research has been successfully commercialized and helped a lot of people, especially those in the coffee industry. 

During his talk, he highlighted the current technological situation in the Philippines, the role of state universities and colleges (SUCs) in technology commercialization, and its impact on society. Dr. Mojica also shared his RMM’s Technology Commercialization Model, which was developed based on his own experiences as a researcher. He finished his talk by reminding everyone that the true measure of success is when the output of our research exceeds its theoretical use in instruction and has a lasting economic and societal impact.

DAFE conducts R&D training and writeshop for the design and development of new products

The Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) conducted training and writeshop on research and development (R&D) for the design and development of new products with GrainPro on April 22, 2022, in San Felipe, Zambales. The activity aims to capacitate and enhance GrainPro's core team in developing and improving new and existing products anchored in research-based approaches. It was participated by the GrainPro Engineering Department and Customer Support Department. On the other hand, the team from DAFE, which served as trainers and facilitators, was composed of Engr. Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, Engr. Jose Carlo R. Dizon, Engr. Al Owen Roy A. Ferrera, and Engr. Richelle Mae M. Olpot.

The training and workshop were mainly focused on the formulation of capsule proposals, which included idea generation, the conduct of Prior Art Search (PAS), and the evaluation of the level of patentability of the developed product. All participants from GrainPro pitched their new and innovative products under the product lines of their company. The team from DAFE reacted and provided comments and recommendations on how to improve their proposed products. Furthermore, each participant submitted a capsule proposal for evaluation by the team from DAFE. 

GrainPro and DAFE have mutually agreed to expand their research and development collaboration in the future. (KACrystal)

Engr. Crystal bags a best paper award in iCEAT 2022

The 1st International Conference on Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (iCEAT 2022) was conducted from February 22-24, 2022 with a theme: "Sustainable Agro-industrial and Food Engineering Systems (SAFE Systems): Current Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities". The conference was hosted by the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (CEAT) of the University of the Philippines-Los Banos. The event is composed of plenary sessions with various renowned speakers across the globe who specializes in the fields of agro-industrial and food engineering. There were also presentations of different research studies that promote food safety, security, and sustainability.

Engr. Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, a faculty member of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering and also the Project Development Officer (PDO) for the CvSU-PhilCAFE Program, participated in the said event and presented his work on the Development of Mechanical Coffee Bean Demucileger. Engr. Crystal together with his co-authors, Dr. Rossana Marie C. Amongo, Dr. Arthur L. Fajardo, and Prof. Glenn N. Baticados, won the 3rd Best Paper Award for the Food Systems, Bioprocess Engineering, and Agricultural and Fisheries Mechanization Track.

Engr. Sierra earns Master's Degree in Agricultural Engineering

The Central Luzon State University in the Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija conducted their virtual 31st Mid - year Commencement Exercises last February 14, 2022. There were a total of 282 graduates of degree programs and 234 graduates of non - degree programs from the nine colleges of CLSU. Engr. Daniel G. Sierra, faculty member of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering, was one of the graduates from the College of Engineering earning a Master's Degree in Agricultural Engineering major in Agricultural Machinery.

Dr. Escobar recognized for her leadership and commitment as STAARDEC Director

Dr. Marilyn Escobar, Vice President for Planning and Development of Cavite State University and a professor from the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering, was recognized last January 21, 2022 on recognition of outgoing consortia officials during  the Joint RRDCC Chairpersons, Consortium Directors and PCARRD Directorate's  Virtual meeting. She served as the director of of the Southern Tagalog Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research, Development and Extension Consortium (STAARDEC) from February 2019 to September 2021. She successfully lead the consortium to attain its goals and objectives and S&T development in CALABARZON Region.
