Dr. Mojica Receives Prestigious Maramba Award at 73rd PSABE National Convention

Legazpi City, Albay - Dr. Ruel M. Mojica, DAFE faculty member and a distinguished figure in the field of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE), was honored with the prestigious Most Outstanding ABE (Dr. Felix Maramba, Sr. Award), the highest award of the profession, at the 73rd PSABE National Convention. The ceremony, held at the Legazpi City Convention Center on April 25, 2024.


Described as dynamic, driven, innovative, and passionate, Dr. Mojica has established himself as an excellent academician, accomplished researcher, and certified inventor. His journey in academia began as the first Cum Laude graduate under the Engineering program at Cavite State University (CVSU). Dr. Mojica's pursuit of knowledge led him to obtain two post-diplomas in coffee chemistry and renewable energy, further enhancing his expertise in the field.

Among his numerous recognitions and awards, Dr. Mojica has received eight scholarship grants, including being the second Fulbright scholar and the first ARRA professorial Chair Grant awardee at CVSU. His innovative spirit is reflected in the three intellectual properties (IPs) under his name, including the Bravura Coffee Roaster patent, trade name, and trademark.

Dr. Mojica's research prowess has earned him 24 Best Paper Awards, highlighting his significant contributions to the field. Notable among these awards are the 2014 PHILBEST Outstanding Extension Project and the 2023 NSARRAH Best Paper Award. His research articles have been featured in various local, national, and international journals and media, showcasing the impact of his work on the agricultural engineering community.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Mojica has demonstrated dedicated service and leadership throughout his career. With over six academic awards to his name, he has been actively involved in numerous research projects, serving as a scientific speaker, evaluator, paper presenter, and referee. His commitment to excellence and ethical standards is evident in his leadership and contributions to the profession.

Engr. Crystal Bags Most Outstanding Young ABE Award at 73rd PSABE National Convention

Legazpi City, Albay - DAFE faculty, Engr. Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, was honored with the prestigious Most Outstanding Young ABE award during the 73rd PSABE National Convention. The event, held at the Legazpi City Convention Center on April 25, 2024, recognized Engr. Crystal's remarkable contributions and achievements in the field.


In his professional roles, he serves as a pivotal figure, overseeing projects related to agriculture as a National Project Coordinator at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Additionally, his role as an Associate Professor II at Cavite State University showcases his commitment to academic excellence and mentorship within the university setting.

His research contributions have significantly impacted the field, particularly in policy studies and rice security assessment. Engr. Crystal has authored proposals for important policy studies and played a key role in the RAAFMech Project, focusing on mechanization in rice production. Furthermore, his involvement in research projects like the "Assessment of Futures of Rice Security of the Philippines" showcase his dedication to informing strategies for sustainable rice production and food security.

Engr. Crystal's extension work, notably leading activities for coffee producer organizations under the PAKAPE Project, has enhanced productivity and market access for local farmers. His efforts have positively impacted communities and strengthened their capabilities in agricultural practices.

His commitment to academic excellence is evident in his academic journey, graduating cum laude with a BS in Agricultural Engineering from Cavite State University and finishing his Master's degree in Agricultural Engineering at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

DAFE Faculty Lead QGIS Training for ABE Professionals

DAFE faculty members took the lead in a recent training initiative organized by DA-ATI CALABARZON's Career Development and Management Section (CDMS). The three-day event, titled "Training on Quantum Geographic Information System for Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers (ABE)," took place from April 10, 12, and 13, 2024, at the DA-ATI CALABARZON Training Hall.

The training, accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit units, attracted 25 ABE professionals from various municipalities, cities, and provincial local government units in the region. Led by DAFE faculty, the sessions aimed to enhance participants' skills in utilizing Quantum GIS for agricultural and biosystems engineering applications.

Throughout the event, topics were carefully curated to cover essential aspects of QGIS application in the field. Engr. Melrose M. Salona introduced participants to QGIS, guiding them through the process of creating basic maps and demonstrating techniques for geotagging and georeferencing. Engr. Al Owen Roy A. Ferrera delved into vector and raster data, acquisition of remotely sensed data, and methods for delineating catchment basins and production areas.

Engr. Jose Carlo R. Dizon provided insights into rainfall data extraction and the determination of flood-prone areas, offering practical strategies for utilizing QGIS in risk assessment and mitigation. Facilitating the entire event was Engr. John Paulo M. Perido, whose guidance ensured an enriching learning experience for all participants.

DAFE Faculty Participates in PSABE IV-A Regional Convention

The Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) faculty participated at the recent 20th PSABE IV-A Regional Convention, held at the Lipa Convention Center. This convention, a cornerstone event for professionals in the agricultural and biosystems engineering sectors, provided a platform for insightful discussions and innovative strategies aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture practices.

The convention kicked off with a series of enlightening plenary sessions featuring distinguished experts in the field. Dr. Ronaldo B. Saludes set the tone with his presentation on "Innovate to Cultivate: Advancing Sustainable Agriculture with SIGLA," offering fresh insights into techniques designed to enhance agricultural productivity sustainably.

Dr. Rossana Marie C. Amongo delved into the Fishery Mechanization Index (FishMI), highlighting its significance as a tool for evaluating mechanization in the fishery sector. Meanwhile, Engr. Crestituto C. Mangaong emphasized the crucial role of efficient water irrigation in the agri-fishery industry, underscoring the importance of water management practices.

The convention continued to explore cutting-edge topics with presentations from Dr. Paolo Rommel P. Sanchez on "Robotics for Sustainable Agricultural Development," and Engr. Jaykie Homer P. Hernandez on the "Evolving Roles of ABE in Sustainable Agricultural Practices." These sessions shed light on the evolving technologies and methodologies that are reshaping the landscape of agriculture and biosystems engineering.

In addition to the enriching plenary sessions, the convention provided a vital platform for a business meeting, where regional and provincial chapter officers convened to discuss future plans and programs. Engr. Crystal Honored as Region IV-A's Most Outstanding Young ABE

Engr. Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, DAFE faculty member, garnered the esteemed title of Region IV-A's Most Outstanding Young ABE at the 20th PSABE IV-A Regional Convention, held in Lipa City, Batangas, on April 11, 2024.

His remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to excellence have distinguished Engr. Crystal earned him widespread acclaim among his fellow ABEs.

In addition to this notable recognition, Engr. Crystal was duly acknowledged for his commendable service as a board member of PSABE Region IV-A, alongside Dr. Ruel M. Mojica from 2023 to 2024.
