Papa earns master's degree in engineering

Engr. Ervin F. Papa
Engr. Ervin F. Papa, a faculty member of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) earned the degree of Master in Engineering major in Water Engineering and Management from the Cavite State University on 3 December 2012.

Engr. Papa is an agricultural engineer and teaches Farm Electrification, Fisheries Science and Mathematics. Currently, he is the coordinator of the DAFE Seminar Series. (SDFenol)

Local PAEStigan held

The Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering sponsored the CEIT PAEStigan at the College Conference Room on 21 November 2012.  The activity aimed to promote awareness among the senior agricultural engineering students about the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards (PAES) and to select the official contestants of the university to the Inter-Luzon State Colleges and Universities PAES Quiz Contest to be held in January at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna.

The local contest simulated the types of questions given in the national contest: written examination for the first round and oral phase for the average and difficult rounds. Annalyn B. Encarnacion (3rd place), Ronnie F. Mercado (2nd place) and Reynaldo V. Villanueva Jr. (1st place) received cash prizes and certificates.

Engr. Ervin F. Papa, coordinator of the activity, announced that Gee Jay C. Bartolome and Claudine May P. Gomez (top two scorers in the written examination round) and Reynaldo V. Villanueva Jr. (top scorer in the problem solving round) would represent the university in the national contest.  (LLCero)

Mojica wins research awards in regional symposium

Dr. Ruel M. Mojica won first place for his research entitled "Influence of Roasting on Total Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Properties of Philippine Coffee" during the 25th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights held at the Cultural Center, Provincial Capitol, Sta. Cruz, Laguna on October 24, 2012. The same research also won third place under the poster category.

Meanwhile, researches entitled “Design and Development of an Automated Bucket Drip Irrigation and Fertigation System” by Engr. A. D. Amante (Batangas State University) and “Construction and Validation of Automated Pandan Stripping Machine” by Mr. Candido Absulio (Southern Luzon State University) were adjudged as second and third place, respectively.

The regional symposium was sponsored by the Southern Tagalog  Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (STARRDEC). (GMCastillo LLCero)

ERDT roadshow to CvSU

Five faculty members from the Institute of Agricultural Engineering (IAE), College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) headed by Dr. Ronaldo B. Saludes, conducted a roadshow on Engineering Research for Development Technology (ERDT) at the College of Engineering and Information Technology,  Cavite State University on 20 September 2012. CEIT Dean Aileen V. Rocillo together with the students and faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering attended the event.

The roadshow aimed to orient the faculty and students on ERDT programs especially on scholarship and the four divisions of IAE. The ERDT program is a Human Resource Development program administered by the Department of Science and Technology.  (GMCastillo)

New professional agricultural engineers

Four graduates of Cavite State University passed the Agricultural Engineer Licensure Examination given on 21-22 August 2012. They are Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, Sherwin A. Malabrigo, Analyn G. Sagana and Loriel C. Yala.

A total of 253 out of 530 passed the examination given by the Board of Agricultural Engineering of the Professional Regulation Commission in the cities of Manila, Baguio and Davao. (LLCero)

Mojica, Castillo bag research awards

Dr. Ruel M. Mojica received the "Best Paper" and "Best Poster" awards for his research "Influence of Roasting on Total Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Properties of Philippine Coffee" during the closing ceremony of the 2012 Agency In-House Review of Cavite State University at the Rolle Hall on 28 June 2012. Meanwhile, Mr. Gerry M. Castillo won the "Best Paper" award in the Development Category for his research "Development of Liberica-based Coffee Blends".

Dr. Mojica and Mr. Castillo are faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering. The former is the officer-in-charge of the National Coffee Research, Development and Extension Center based in CvSU.  (LLCero)

 Dr. Camilo A. Polinga, chairman of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering, was recently designated as director of Public Information and Community Relations Office (PICRO) of Cavite State University.

12 AE students graduate

Twelve BS Agricultural Engineering students received their diplomas during the 90th Commencement Exercises of the Cavite State University on 30 April 2012 at the Gov. Ayong S. Maliksi Provincial Gymnasium in Trece Martires City. Hon. Juanito Victor C. Remulla, Jr., governor of the province of Cavite, served as the commencement speaker of this event.

Among them, three were awarded cum laude, namely: Kelvin Michael A. Crystal, Analyn G. Sagana, and Loriel C. Yala.

General engineering students take qualifying examination

The Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) successfully conducted the qualifying examination for incoming third year engineering students on 26 April 2012 at DAFE Rooms 1, 2 and 3. Engr. Ervin F. Papa coordinated the exam together with Mr. Gerry M. Castillo, Ms. Sheryl D. Fenol and Engr. Liezl R. Montaron.

Out of 116 incoming third year engineering students, 27 were exempted to take the said exam. Bernadette A. Descartin topped this year’s batch with a grade point average (GPA) of 1.40. The Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers (PSAE) recognized two faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering as outstanding agricultural engineers during its 62nd Annual National Convention on 23-27 April 2012 in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Dr. Leyma L. Cero received the “Outstanding Agricultural Engineer in Agricultural Engineering Education” while Dr. Ruel M. Mojica was adjudged as “Outstanding Agricultural Engineer in Postharvest Technology and Food Engineering.” At present, Dr. Leyma L. Cero is the MIS officer of the College of Engineering and Information Technology while Dr. Ruel M. Mojica is the officer-in-charge of the National Coffee Research, Development and Extension Center.

In addition, eight other awards were presented to outstanding professionals in other fields of agricultural engineering including the highest award, “Most Outstanding Agricultural Engineer – Maramba Award”, given to Dr. Manolito C. Bulaong from the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. (GMCastillo)

College profs speak at national biogas training

Drs. David L. Cero, Camilo A. Polinga and Prof. Jaime Q. Dilidili of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering and Engrs. Rico C. Asuncion and Renato B. Cubilla of the Department of Civil Engineering served as resource persons during the 6th National Training Course on Biogas Technology held at the Hostel Tropicana, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite on 23-26 April 2012. 

The training was attended by 22 participants from different Affiliated Renewable Energy Centers (ARECs) and local government units throughout the country. It was sponsored by the Department of Energy and Cavite State University. (LLCero)

Castillo earns master's degree in management

Mr. Gerry M. Castillo, a faculty member of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) earned the degree of Master in Management from the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) on 23 March 2012.

Mr. Castillo is an industrial engineer and teaches Industrial Organization and Management, Engineering Economy and Mathematics. Currently, he is the coordinator of the DAFE Newsletter. (SDFenol)

AE student, elected VP of CSG

Reynaldo Villanueva, fourth year agricultural engineering student and the former president of the CEIT League of Student Organizations, was elected as the vice president of the Central Student Government (CSG) on 5 – 6 March 2012.

Candidates of the party Students’ Agenda for Truth, Excellence and Service (STATES) won over Students Unite for Leadership Onwards Nationalism Governance (SULONG-CvSU). Mr. Villanueva received 1,726 votes against 788 votes of his contender Raphael Peñalba. Other elected CSG officers are: Ronie Jay Mendoza (President); Liezl dela Cruz (Secretary); Ma. Teresa Margarita Alfaro (Treasurer); Jeffrey Tupil and Rochelle Labro (Business Managers); and Michael Mugol (PRO).

Meanwhile, Gee-Jay Bartolome, a third-year agricultural engineering student was also elected as the president of the CEIT Student Council (CEIT-SC) for the SY 2012-2013.

CvSU students responsibly practiced their rights and cast their votes on this two-day activity which was facilitated by the Student Organizations and Socio-Cultural Affairs (SOSCA) headed by Engr. Edison E. Mojica. (GMCastillo)

CvSU, 3rd placer in PAEStigan

Three Agricultural Engineering students from the Cavite State University (CvSU) participated in the PAEStigan: The 2nd Inter-Luzon State Colleges and Universities PAES (Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards) Quiz Contest held at the Electrical Engineering Building, University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna on 28 January 2012. Kelvin Michael Crystal, Analyn Sagana and Loriel Yala composed the CvSU team. They were accompanied by Engr. Ervin F. Papa as coach.

Out of 15 participating SCUs, the Camarines Norte State College, Benguet State University and CvSU emerged as the Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up and were awarded with trophies and cash prizes amounting to P50,000; P30,000 and P20,000, respectively.

Likewise, Loriel Yala topped the written examination and was awarded with a medal.

The UP Society of Agricultural Engineering Students (UP SAGES), in partnership with the Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers-Region IV Chapter (PSAE-IV), Agricultural Machinery Testing and Evaluation Center (AMTEC), and the Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CEAT-IAE), sponsored the activity. The activity aimed to: 1) challenge the proficiency of Agricultural Engineering students with the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards (PAES), 2) expose the students to the actual application and development of these standards, and 3) promote camaraderie between and among participants.

Other participating SCUs include: Bulacan Agricultural State College, Cagayan State University, Central Luzon State University, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Isabela State University, Kalinga-Apayao State College, Pampanga Agricultural College, Pangasinan State University, Romblon State University, University of Rizal System, and Western Philippines University.
