PSAE-PPG CvSU Chapter joins convention

The Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers – Pre-Professional Group Cavite State University Chapter (PSAE-PPG CvSU Chapter) participated in the 15th PSAE-PPG Annual Luzon Convention and 1st PSAE Bulacan Chapter Convention on 1 – 3 December 2011 at the Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC). The event with the theme “Agricultural Engineering RE-EDUCATION: The Key to a Stronger AE Profession” was participated by 30 BS Agricultural Engineering students. Hon. Proceso J. Alcala, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, graced the event as guest speaker. AE Challenge, CAD Challenge, Tractor Driving and Hitching, Tractor Parts Identification, and Mr. and Ms. PSAE highlighted the activities of the convention.

Furthermore, the chapter bagged the following awards: 3rd place, Tractor Parts Identification (Reynaldo Villanueva); 7th place, AE Quiz Bee (Loriel Yala and Kelvin Michael Crystal); 1st runner-up, Ms. PSAE-PPG and Ms. Congeniality (Alexandra Alexis Samson); 2nd runner-up, Mr. PSAE-PPG and Best in Casual Wear (Aljon Penus). AE students finish studies

Halcy Lemon P. Orquina and Relbert C. Resontoc, BS Agricultural Engineering students, were two of the graduates of the 89th Commencement Exercises of the Cavite State University. The mid-year graduation was held on 17 November 2011 at the University Quadrangle. Hon. Roy M. Loyola, Cavite’s 5th District Representative, served as the commencement speaker.

Baltazar and Castillo complete MPEX training

Prof. Conrado M. Baltazar and Mr. Gerry M. Castillo, DAFE faculty members, completed the six-month training, “Local Consultant for the Manufacturing Productivity and Extension Program (MPEX)” from March to September 2011. The training was coordinated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-4A), Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) and various state colleges and universities in the region.

MPEX aims to develop local experts to assist the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector to attain higher productivity. Various industries in Cavite enrolled in the program were assisted through the supervision of Summit Consultancy and Research Services headed by Ms. Geraldine R. Lim.

The certificate of completion was given on 18 November 2011 during the 48th Anniversary Celebration of DOST 4-A at the Regional Food Safety and Quality Assurance Center (RFSQAC), Los BaƱos, Laguna. Mr. Gilberto David, faculty member from the College of Economics, Management, and Development Studies (CEMDS), also completed the same training. (GMCastillo)

Three AE graduates pass licensure exam

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 240 out of 502 (47.81%) passed the Agricultural Engineer Licensure Examination given by the Board of Agricultural Engineering in the cities of Manila, Baguio and Davao this August 2011. The members of the Board of Agricultural Engineering are Engr. Ariodear C. Rico, Chairman; Engr. Juana T. Tapel and Engr. Felimar M. Torrizo, Members. (www.prc.gov.ph)

The Cavite State University (CvSU) received a 50% passing percentage, 3 passers out of 6 takers of the AE Licensure Examination. New professional agricultural engineers are Engrs. Rolando Barlizo, Karen Sagana, and Albert Terante.

According to PRC, registration for the issuance of professional ID and certificate of registration will be on 2 – 9 September 2011. The oath taking ceremony will be held on 15 September 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pandanggo Hall, Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel, One Rizal Park , Roxas Boulevard , Manila. (JHPHernandez)

Fenol earns MS degree in electronics engineering

Ms. Shery D. Fenol, faculty member of DAFE, earned the degree of Master of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering major in Microelectronics at the Mapua Institute of Technology on 18 August 2011.

Ms. Fenol was a scholar under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP). Currently, she teaches College Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, and Calculus. She is also the MIS officer of the department. (GMCastillo)

RMMojica designated as NCRDEC head

Dr. Ruel M. Mojica, DAFE faculty, was recently designated as the officer-in-charge of the National Coffee Research Development and Extension Center (NCRDEC) of the Cavite State University. Under the Office Memorandum 76, s.2011, the designation is effective from 25 July to 31 December 2011.

NCRDEC is committed to strengthen research and development activities and enhance the extension delivery system of the Philippine Coffee that will lead to increased productivity, sustainability and global competitiveness.

Dr. Mojica is an agricultural engineer and the only faculty member in the University who has received a post doctoral research fellowship grant from the University of the Philippines - Natural Sciences Research Institute (UP-NSRI) and the Department of Agricultural - Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) Post Doctoral Research Fellowship on June 2010. Baltazar presents research highlights at CHED zonal research symposium

Prof. Conrado M. Baltazar, DAFE faculty, presented the highlights of his completed research entitled, “Assessment of Cleaner Production in the Meat Industry in the Philippines” at the Zonal Research Symposium on 23 – 24 June 2011 at the Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, Lucena City. The symposium was sponsored by the CHED-UPLB Zonal Research Center and participated in by several researchers, academicians and research managers all over the country.

PSAE-PPG-CvSU Chapter welcomes new members

The Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers – Pre-Professional Group CvSU Chapter (PSAE – PPG – CvSU),welcomed new members during its general assembly on 30 June 2011 at the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) lecture room.

During the assembly, new officers were also elected and a slideshow was presented to the group. The presentation discussed significant information about Agricultural Engineering as a field, its work opportunities and others.

Reynaldo Villanueva, Jr. and Geegay Bartolome elected as the President and Vice-President of the group, respectively. Other elected officers are the following: Mabelleona Cruzado (Secretary); Venus Florence Vicedo (Auditor); Jennifer Ditan (Treasurer); Paulo Perido (Business Manager); Alexandra Samson (PRO); Michael Jordel Matundan (PRO); Arjay Arpia (1st year Representative); Kimberly Loyola (3rd year Representative); Jan Michael Simora (4th year Representative); Loriel Yala (5th year Representative); Kristel Mariae Pulido (Muse); and Aljon Penus (Escort).

Martolome receives ATI scholarship

The Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) – Region IVA under its Capability Building Program recently announced availability of scholarship slots for degree and non-degree training in agriculture and fisheries.

Geejay C. Bartolome, a third year BS Agricultural Engineering student, qualified and granted a scholarship by the ATI under the Youth in Agriculture and Fisheries Program (YAFP). As a YAFP scholar, he is entitled to receive the following benefits: matriculation and other school fees; Php 3,000 book allowance annually; Php 9,000 thesis support; and a monthly stipend of Php 6,000. As a grantee, he is required to maintain a grade point average of 2.0 to continuously avail of these privileges.

Montaron, Bago and Dizon earn MS degrees

Cavite State University (CvSU) conducted its 88th Commencement Exercises on 26 April 2011 at the Gov. Ayong S. Maliksi Provincial Gynasium in Trece Martirez City. Hon. Strike B. Revilla served as the commencement’s guest of honor.

Among the graduates, three were faculty members of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT): Engr. Liezl R. Montaron, Engr. Cene M. Bago, and Mr. Andy A. Dizon. The three earned a degree of Master of Engineering on their respective specialization.

Engr. Liezl R. Montaron is an Agricultural Engineer and currently the secretary of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE). She teaches Mathematics and major subjects for Agricultural Engineering. Engr. Cene M. Bago is a Civil Engineer and the Head of the Planning Section of the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) of the University. Engr. Bago holds major subjects for Civil Engineering. Mr. Andy A. Dizon, Computer Engineer, is a faculty member of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering (DCEE) and presently holds subject for Computer Technician.

Additionally, Mr. Francis P. Argete, Jr., a staff from the Dean’s Office also earned his degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology with specialization in Automotive Technology. (GMCastillo)

GE students take qualifying exam

The Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) successfully conducted the qualifying examination for incoming third year Engineering students on 28 April 2011 at DAFE rooms 1, 2 and 3. The exam was coordinated by Mr. Gerry M. Castillo together with Engrs. Jaykie Homer P. Hernandez, Liezl R. Montaron and Ervin F. Papa.

Out of 107 incoming third year Engineering students, nineteen (19) were exempted to take the said exam. Kevin I. Lungcay topped this year’s batch of General Engineering with a grade point average (GPA) of 1.39. Other exempted students are the following: Rodney B. Javier (1.42); Junelle Christian M. Obice (1.51); Geejay C. Bartolome (1.52); Patrick Jerald L. Camilon (1.56); Rodnel Rick C. Cervantes (1.57); Jomar B. Engalan (1.57); Jumel R. Hernandez (1.61); Jonathan A. Campat (1.62); Eugene R. Bagay, Jr. (1.64); Jenelyn G. Cabading (1.67); Wella C. Lopez (1.70); Angelo James R. Ambion (1.71); Valerrie M. Espinosa (1.72); Lalaine G. Loquere (1.72); Mac Chester D. DAFE and DCE visit La Mesa water treatment plant and eco-park

The Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) and the Department of Civil Engineering (DCE) headed by Engrs. Cesar C. Carriaga and Marcelino A. Dagasdas, Jr., respectively, visited La Mesa Water Treatment Plant and Eco-Park in Quezon City on 4 March 2011.

The educational trip aimed to expose the students to the actual operation and system of La Mesa water treatment plant.

The activity was participated in by the students of Agricultural Engineering (25), Civil Engineering (45), Architecture (18), and 11 faculty members from both departments. (GMCastillo)

Cero and Polinga, accredited as full-fledged professors

Drs. David L. Cero and Camilo A. Polinga, faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) have been accredited by the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) as full-fledged professors on 24 – 25 February 2011 at H20 Hotel, Manila.

Dr. David L. Cero is the CEIT Research and Extension Coordinator while Dr. Camilo A. Polinga heads the Regional Center on Information and Communications Technology and one of the advocates of renewable energy technology in the Philippines. (GMCastillo)

CvSU bags grand slam title in regional work summit

With a total score of 452.33, Cavite State University (CvSU) won the championship title for the fifth time against the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU), 317.83, and University of Rizal System (URS), 265.08, during the FFP-FAHP-FFPCC Regional Work Summit held at Romblon State University, Odiongan Romblon on 5-11 February 2011.The weeklong summit was participated in by nine state universities and colleges (SUCs) from Region IV-A and B excluding the host school. It covers competitions in nine categories, each with a set of contests in agriculture, fisheries, homemaking, musical-literary-academic and parliamentary procedure demonstration. Some of them are project proposal, quiz bee, landscaping and other skills contests. CvSU got 20 first places in 48 competitions; 7 second places, 6 third places and the remaining were 4th and 5th excluding the three contests which have no point for CvSU.

The summit was revived last February 2006 with LSPU as the first host school. From then on, CvSU has always been the champion, hence the University was conferred the Hall of Fame award.

The CvSU delegation headed by Dr. Divinia C. Chavez, CvSU President, were mostly students of agriculture-based courses for FFPCC and high school students from Laboratory School for FFP and FAHP. Three of the 15 delegates of FFPCC are 4th year agricultural engineering students, namely: Analyn Sagana, Loriel Yala and Kelvin Michael Crystal who were champions in the project proposal and product development contest. Other contests they participated in were parliamentary procedure demonstration (2nd runner up), laying out an orchard (2nd runner up) and soil analysis (4th runner up).

Other heads of the delegation were Dr. Adolfo C. Manuel, Dean of College of Agriculture Forestry Environment and Natural Resources (CAFENR), Dr. Ma. Agnes P. Nuestro , Dean of College of Education (CEd), and Prof. Dulce L. Ramos, Principal of CvSU Science High School (CvSU - SHS). FFP-FAHP advisers who joined the convention were Dr. Liza C. Costa, Prof. Eleanor G. Ersando, Mrs. Solita R. Poblete, Mr. Alfredo A. Venzon, Ms. Maricar D. Soriano and Mr. Estelito A. Alaman. CEIT profs receive service award

Cavite State University (CvSU) held its 105th foundation day on 7 February 2011 with the theme “CvSU@105: Promoting Good Governance through Educational Reforms.” Hon. Patricia B. Licuanan, Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), was the guest honor and speaker of the celebration.

One of the memorable highlights of the celebration is the recognition of faculty and employees for their dedicated service to the University. Among the awardees, seven (7) were from the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT).

Ms. Charlotte B. Carandang, Engr. Michael T. Costa, Mr. Danielito A. EscaƱo, and Dr. Shaneth A. Estrada were the recipients of the 10-year service award.

Ms. Charlotte B. Carandang is a faculty member of the Department of Information Technology (DIT) and the head of the Computer Center Laboratory (CCL) of the University Computer Center (UCC). Engr. Michael T. Costa is a faculty member of the Department of Computer and Electronics Engineering (DCEE) and currently taking his doctorate degree in TUP, Manila. Mr. Danielito A. EscaƱo is a faculty member of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology (DIET) and handles subjects for BIT major in Automotive Technology program. Dr. Shaneth A. Estrada, DIT Chair, obtained her doctorate degree in Information Technology in South Korea.

Mr. Simeon E. Daez, DIT faculty member, also received the 15-year service award. He is currently the college’s Quality Assurance Officer and head of their CISM section.

Moreover, Drs. David L. Cero and Marilyn M. Escobar, faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE), were two of the five 25-year service awardees. Agricultural Engineering students join PAEStigan

Rolando B. Barlizo, Halcy Lemon P. Orquina, and Albert Y. Terante, fifth year BS in Agricultural Engineering students, represented the Cavite State University (CvSU) in the PAEStigan at the EE Building, University of the Philippines - Los BaƱos (UPLB), College, Laguna on 28 January 2011.PAEStigan is the First Annual Inter - Luzon State Colleges and Universities Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards (PAES) quiz contest.

The quiz contest was sponsored by the University of the Philippines Society of Agricultural Engineering Students (UPSAGES), a pioneer academic organization in the College of Engineering and Agro-industrial Technology and duly recognized by the University of the Philippines – Los BaƱos. The activity aimed to challenge the proficiency of agricultural engineering students with PAES, to expose the students to the actual application and development of these standards, and to promote camaraderie between and among participants.

Participating state colleges and universities were the following: Benguet State University (BSU), Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Nueva Viscaya State University (NVSU), Pangasinan State University (PSU), Tarlac College of Agriculture (TCA) and Cavite State University (CvSU).

CvSU ranked fourth while NVSU, BSU and CBSUA, concluded as the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively. (EFPapa)

GE students participate in AutoMATHic 2011

Six sophomore General Engineering students, namely: Ralf Loren Angeles, Geejay Bartolome, Rodnel Rick Cervantes, Jumel Hernandez, Rodney Javier, and Kevin Lungcay, represented the Cavite State University (CvSU) in AutoMATHic 2011 on 15 Januray 2011 at the University of the Philippines – Los BaƱos (UPLB), College, Laguna.

AutoMATHic 2011 is an invitational intercollegiate mathematics quiz contest established in 2000 that aims primarily on contributing improvements in Mathematics in the Philippine education system. The University of the Philippines Civil Engineering Society (UPCES) in cooperation with the UPLB Mathematics Division sponsored the event and it was participated in by more than 20 public and private universities nationwide.

Teams from the University of the Philippines – Diliman, Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) – Manila, and TIP – Quezon City emerged as the champion, first runner – up and second runner – up, respectively. They received plaques, certificates and a cash prize of PhP 30,000, PhP 20,000, and PhP 10,000, respectively.

DAFE and DCE revisit Gawad Kalinga

The Department of Civil Engineering (DCE) and Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) headed by Engrs. Marcelino A. Dagasdas, Jr. and Cesar C. Carriaga, respectively, revisited Gawad Kalinga Inc. in Rosario, Cavite on 21 January 2010.

The activity was part of the extension services of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT) wherein they served the Gawad Kalinga by doing construction works in their housing project which was participated in by 57 students enrolled in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, and six faculty members from the two departments.

CEIT and CAFENR join together for GK beneficiaries

The College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT) and the College of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Natural Resources (CAFENR) headed by Engr. Renato B. Cubilla and Dr. Adolfo Manuel Jr., respectively, joined together for an outreach activity to the beneficiaries of Gawad Kalinga (GK) Foundation in Aguado, Trece Martires City on 19 December 2010.

Dr. David L. Cero, CEIT Research and Extension coordinator, spearheaded the collection of funds and preparation of gift items for this endeavor.

Faculty members from various departments and units of both colleges sang Christmas carols before they gave the gifts to each GK household. Engr. Leopoldo G. Talatala, GK-Cavite Director, thanked the delegates from the two colleges during their Christmas program. Children from the beneficiaries also gave thanks by actively performing their dancing skills. CEIT holds thanksgiving party

In view of the Christmas season, the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT) headed by Engr. Renato B. Cubilla, held its thanksgiving party on 20 December 2010 at the terrace of the CEIT Building. The Department of Civil Engineering headed by Engr. Marcelino A. Dagasdas, Jr., served as the host unit for this year’s celebration.

Lots of gifts from various donors were given to each member of the college through raffle draws and fun activities such as family apir, pinoy henyo, beer-drinking contest, and others. Talent presentations of each department and unit of the college highlighted the celebration.

The faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (DAFE) and the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering (DCEE) showcased their talents in dancing. Moreover, the faculty members of the Department of Information Technology (DIT) displayed their talents in singing while the Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology (DIET) performed both talents.
